We went last Saturday night at the last minute because our kids did not feel like going out to dinner. Looked on Open Table and of course no early reservations. We usually like Mccormicks, Fleming's, Bravo, or our standby Mosaic in Des Peres due to location close to home. We had not been to Gerard's in a few years so we thought we would support a local non chain restaurant. Big mistake. The good: easy to get a table since it was practically empty at 630pm. I had the special- stone crab claws for appetizer and salmon. Quick service, both items good. The bad: The restaurant smelled moldy, very outdated decor, pre-made cold risotto with the consistency of rice pilaf. Creamed spinach was soupy. They could not substitute another risotto so I had lukewarm dry herbed potatoes. We were disappointed so we ordered key lime pie to make up for so-so dinner. Big mistake! We each took one bite and we were done! Asked for bill, drove in the rain down the street to Mosaic and had the bread pudding and glass of wine at the bar to salvage the evening. Never, ever again. The Tavern, Bistro 1130,Brio's, Ruth Chris, Trufflles, or J Gilbert's have nothing to worry about. This place used to be better or they were having a bad night. This is my first review on Yelp . I had to join because I was soo disappointed.

A real surprise. We'd meant to go for some time but for some reason never did. Our loss. A definitely old school menu, but food was well prepared and promptly served. Good selection of fresh fish and prices were very reasonable for expensive cuts of meat. Incredible house salad. Crowd was older but servers were young and friendly. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the wine list, which was unbelievable. Owner is friendly, self professed "wine geek" and he really knows his stuff. Vintage California, French and Italian, among others. Lots of "rock star" bottles for the serious wine lover. Reasonably priced and I dare say the best collection in St. Louis. We brought a young Cali Cab for a special occasion but also ordered a 1997 Brunello that was outstanding and was one of at least 6 '97s on the list. Finally, order the flaming cappuccino for dessert. You will not be disappointed. We will be back and will bring more friends.

Have been to Gerard's a number of times over the years. Food is always consistently good with attentive and friendly service. So much better than the proliferation of chain places in west county. Good selection of seasonal fresh seafood. Have enjoyed everything from stone crabs to sand dabs to veal osso bucco. Also has a great wine list. Will return and recommend to others.

Was not sure when I entered. Not many guests in the place on this cold, cold night and the decor is both "tired" and an odd combo of Italian and southwestern. Be aware that this is relaxed dining. You will not be rushed. Our server had humor and a spark, which made interacting with him fun. I'm usually a salad eater but decided to try the zuppe del pesce linguini and... it was the best I've had. A half order was more than enough. It was chock-a-block full of seafood, huge shrimp and some lobster. The sauce was light and an excellent balance of flavors. I would have been pleased to pay more for it than I did but am delighted at the value. My companion had the crab-stuffed filet and it was cooked perfectly (which seems oddly difficult to find these days) and was stuffed with actual crabmeat. The asparagus side was done well and we polished that off happily. We were tempted by the strawberry ice cream rolled in very fine graham cracker crumbs. Was it good? Well, I made animal sounds when I partook. The only disappoint in the meal was the coffee. I'll skip that next time and there WILL be a next time. For vinophiles, it had an extensive wine list and dozens of wine-related awards hanging on the walls. Come with cash in your pocket because a good bottle of wine will set you back but you know that going in, don't you? If you want rushed service or "hip" decor, go elsewhere. If you want to dine with a friend over an excellent meal, by all means, give Gerard's a try.

Terrible. This is a sign of a restaurant that is going under and is cutting every corner possible to try to make money. The food is awful - low quality, no creativity, poor execution, and wildly overpriced. I am astounded this place is in business. I predict it will be gone or completely redone within 12 months. I would rather go to Kill Me It's Friday's than Gerard's. Do yourself a favor and cook at home or just skip the meal.

Oh NO!!! We dropped in here last night! It is like a time machine back to the 1980's! There was no one at the front of the restaurant when we walked in, so we hung our own coats in the check room! Finally the owner came out and showed us to a table. The decor is so dated and as we found out, so is the menu! It took forever for a server to stop by our table to get a drink order and bring menus. Then about 20 minutes for him to come back to take orders. The menu looks as if it hasn't been updated since they opened (probably in the '80s), but the prices certainly have! I thought it was pretty pricey for most of the entrees. Lots of old fashioned "Italian" entrees - both pastas and proteins. The fish selection was impressive. I ordered the grouper, my husband and friend ordered the zuppe del pesce linguini and her husband ordered the salmon. We all had caesar salads. The salads arrived fairly promptly but they were soaked in dressing and very small for the price! It only got worse from there! My grouper was spoiled! One taste and I put my fork down. The server finally came over and took it away and brought another fish dish from the 'special' menu. It was fine. However, the green beans were frozen and had carrots grated over the top. The risotto that came with the entrees must have been pre-made. It was the most awful mess I have ever tasted! The salmon freshness was marginal, too. The linguini was a huge bowl of pasta, a little bit of seafood and a LOT of garlic! It had neither shrimp nor lobster as advertised. The owner was buzzing around the entire time we were there, but never stopped to say anything about the spoiled fish! However, funny moment.......the bus woman asked me, as she was filling my water glass, "if I had been out last night?" My shocked look prompted her to add "that I must have been out last night and was dehydrated!!!" I guess because she had filled my glass several times! NEVER AGAIN!!!

I was pleasantly surprised with the service and the meal. To start, the bread was served warm and the butter was sweet and definitely delicious. The salad was tossed table side and the creamy Italian dressing was very good. I had chicken and my mom had tilapia. Both were quite tasty. The service was excellent and when I ordered my entree, the server made sure to describe the entree since the menu did not specifically state that the chicken was "stuffed" with Gorgonzola and spinach. We did not have any wine, but the wine cellar was visible from our table and they had quite a selection. The only suggestion I have for this restaurant is that it needs a decor update. The owner was walking around and it was obvious that he knows his patrons and called the regulars by name. He joked with us and just made for a very nice, relaxing experience. One other thing I noticed about this place is that it is very quiet, even with many tables full. I'll definitely visit again.

3.5 stars for the food. I'd normally round up, but there were enough service gaffes that I'm not quite comfortable rounding up here. I found the food to range from average to excellent. The excellent: tenderloin stuffed with crab meat was amazing. Tenderloin (my order! I love when I get the best dish!) was a perfect medium rare (as ordered), and there was a generous portion of crab meat inside. The sauce on it was also delicious. The veal oscar was also really good, and had an extremely generous portion of lobster. The good: Freshly baked warm bread. The strip steak was amazing. My house salad which came with fresh mozzarella, roasted eggplant and roasted red pepper was a unique salad option. It wasn't anything I couldn't make myself, but it was well-executed, and I appreciated having the option of getting something other than a basic salad. Everyone else in my group got the dinner salad with creamy italian dressing, tossed tableside. Most of my family really loved it, but husband and I thought they went a bit heavy on the dressing. Next time, I'll ask for the dressing on the side. The average: Ribeye was perfectly fine, but nothing special. I've cooked just as good of a ribeye. Rack of lamb was tasty, but just a little tough. The service: Friendly, though slow at first, especially since we were close to the only people there when we first arrived (early reservations, filled up a bit later on). Server was good about dealing with my family's picky requests and side substitution requests. Brother's medium rare steak came out well-done though, and it took a really long time for him to get another one. Luckily he's a fast eater, because most of us were finished by the time his new steak came out. Also, the credit card machine was down, which meant we had to write down the credit card number for them to run the following week. I understand that sometimes that sort of thing can't be helped, but that doesn't mean I'm comfortable having my credit card number sitting around a random restaurant all weekend. Finally, we specifically asked about handicap accessibility when making the reservation, and they gave us the one table that's up a step on a platform-type thing. My grandfather uses a walker and is extremely weak, and struggled quite a bit to get up, but was way too proud to ask for a different table. So if anyone at Gerard's reads this, next time someone asks for a handicap accessible table, the one on a platform really isn't ideal. Overall though, I thought the food was good, and I'll keep this place in mind when I'm in St. Louis in the future.
